So I tried some older versions, and finally when I tried a version from before 1.0.0, it worked!Īfter testing a couple more versions, I can conclude that this issue was introduced in 1.0.0rc1, 0.13.1, does not have this issue.Īssertion failed: isStereo = _, file graphics/video/smk_decoder.cpp, line 764 I figured that since this error was the same in both my host Windows 7, and in my guest Windows XP, and since I couldn't find any other mention of this error anywhere, it might have been recently introduced with a newer version of ScummVM. Today I went back to plan A, trying to get it to work in Windows 7, and decided to give ScummVM another shot. Resolution changes, and the system freezes. It did this several times, so I tried just copying over the installed game and running it, skipping the install process. The resolution changed (the installer is also a full screen application), and the guest system froze. I installed Windows 98 in a new virtual machine, and after installing DirectX 2 and rebooting (god, I had almost forgot all the reboots.), I tried installing the game. Screw this, i thought, let's try with plan C Windows 98. So I tried ScummVM in the virtual machine too, but it kept crashing there too, reporting the same error as in the Windows 7 host system. Skipping the cutscenes, the game appeared to run fine though, but I wasn't satisfied with that. I understand it's some kind of DirectX 2 video format, so I tried installing DirectX2, but the installer completed instantly after clicking the install button - I suspect it detected a newer version, and refused to actually install anything. I started plan B, installing Windows XP in a VMware machine, and using compatibility mode, I was able to install the game, and start it up (it even accepted the iso I had mounted in daemon-tools in my host system, and then used that drive as the drive for the guest system), but the cutscenes didn't work. I downloaded the newest version (1.1.1), and the cutscene pack, copied over the files from the discs as someone described, and tried to start the game, but ScummVM crashed. I went looking for a no-cd crack without luck, but then someone referred to ScummVM. Fair enough, i thought, so I dug out the original disc, dusted it off, and put it in my old PATA DVD burner (I thought that the old DRM might have issues with SATA devices.), but it still wouldn't recognize the disc. Trying to start the game in compatibility mode seemed to work, but it wouldn't recognize the iso as CD1. I mounted my iso's, and using compatibility mode, I was able to run and complete the installer, though the colors were a bit off. I knew getting it to work in a 64-bit version of Windows 7 might be a problem, if it was even possible (I wasn't sure if Broken Sword was a 16-bit application). Yesterday I got the urge to play Broken Sword again, and wanted to start with the first one, of course.
